I had a very enjoyable pet portrait session with Makaela Clark and Gidget recently, down at the Botanical Gardens on Lake Wendouree. Makaela really has a bond with Gidget, and was able to get her to run through a grassed area repeatedly, to sit relatively still and to walk past her and turn really well. It’s always a pleasure photographing a dog that really loves its owner and does its best to be obedient.
Having worked my way through hundreds of shots and developed a selection for Makaela to see, I visited her at her home and we looked at them together, figuring out of course what she liked best, but also what went together and what sizes to order. After quietly savouring Makaela’s enjoyment (I really love it when I get to show the images!), and helping her select the ones she wanted for printing, I printed and mounted the ones she chose and delivered them to her.
It’s always a buzz to hear the responses from the dog owners; both as I show them the images on my tablet, and when they get their beautiful artwork! It’s the love of dogs and mutual enjoyment of them with the dog owners that makes dog photography so much fun for me. It’s a lot of work, no mistake; but it’s really appreciated by my customers and it gives me a lasting satisfaction to see their enjoyment and know my images are on their walls
