Those significant photographs

I delivered three prints of Myer recently. There were technically better photographs than two of these, but they were selected not on technical assessment, but emotional significance. I would never have selected the one in the wheelchair; in truth I would never have taken it if the owner had not requested it. But it’s not about me. It’s about the owner and what they see of special expressions, postures, placement and relationship. The wheelchair shot was included because the owner is over ninety years old, and Myer hops into her wheelchair with regularity. It’s of significance now, and it’s going to be of significance to her daughter when she’s gone.

There are a number of photographs owner have selected from the past four or five years that I would never have chosen myself; but then I’m not the one who’s going to be looking at them on the wall each day!
